Venezuelan FlagThe Flag of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela was created by the forerunner of its Independence, Francisco de Miranda, who hoisted the Flag for the first time on his ship, the Leander, in Jacmel, Haiti on March 12th, 1806 as part of his expedition for freedom. The National Flag, accepted by the National Assembly on March 7th, 2006, is made up of the colors yellow, blue and red; unified in three equal size horizontal stripes. The yellow stripe is on the top, followed by the blue and lastly the red. On the left side of the yellow horizontal stripe, the National Coat of Arms is displayed. In the blue stripe there are eight five point white stars, placed in a centered semicircle which convexes toward the top. The yellow stripe is said to represent the riches of its land, the blue represents the courage and heroism of its armies and the red for the bloodshed in battle for independence. National Flag Day is celebrated every year on August 3rd. ![]() Himno a la bandera de VenezuelaI
Oh Bandera del pueblo Caribe
vivo foco de luz y de honor
en tus pliegues mi patria se exhibe
grande en gloria y rica en valor.
II
Difundiste por cumbres y llanos
la epopeya de la libertad
y dejaste sobre ambos océanos
los relumbres de la heroicidad.
III
Venezuela la hermosa y pujante
en sus brazos la gloria te alzo
y en tu seno de amor palpitante
siete estrellas de vida encendió.

Venezuelan Coat of ArmsThe Coat of Arms of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela consists of three quadrants with the colors of the National Flag; the first quadrant, on the top left will be red in color and within, it will contain a handful of yellow ears of wheat and as many sprigs as there are states in the union, which symbolize the earth wealth and the union of the states. The second of quadrant, on the top right will be yellow in color and as a symbol of triumph it will contain a sword, a lance, a bow, an arrow inside a quiver and two flags of Venezuela united by a laurel crown. The third quadrant of blue color occupies the entire bottom portion of the Coat of Arms with an indomitable white horse galloping toward the left of the onlooker and facing forward, emblem of independence and freedom. As a symbol of abundance the Coat of Arms will have two intertwined cornucopias full of fruit and tropical flowers and to its lateral sides an olive branch on the left side and a palm on the right side of the onlooker, tied together on the bottom of the Coat of Arms by a national tricolor ribbon. On the blue section of the ribbon there are the following inscriptions: on the left side “19 de Abril de 1810” and “Independencia”, on the right side “20 de Febrero de 1859” and “Federación” and in the middle “República Bolivariana de Venezuela”. ![]() The National Anthem¡Gloria al Bravo Pueblo!
(Chorus)
¡Gloria al bravo pueblo!
que el yugo lanzó
la Ley respetando
la virtud y honor.
I
¡Abajo cadenas! (bis)
gritaba el señor (bis)
y el pobre en su choza
Libertad pidió:
A este santo nombre
tembló de pavor
el vil egoísmo
que otra vez triunfó.
(Chorus)
II
¡Gritemos con brío! (bis)
¡Muera la opresión! (bis)
Compatriotas fieles,
la fuerza es la unión;
y desde el Empíreo
el Supremo Autor,
un sublime aliento
al pueblo infundió.
(Chorus)
III
Unida con lazos (bis)
que el cielo formó, (bis)
la América toda
existe en nación;
y si el despotismo
levanta la voz,
seguid el ejemplo
que Caracas dió.

National Bird - The Turpial![]() Courtesy of Wordress.com It is represented by the ‘turpial’, known scientifically as ‘Icterus Icterus’. The turpial was declared National Bird on May 23rd 1958. Its attractive colors characterize it, as the yellowed-orange on its entire body; its head and wings are black with white parts and vibrant blue coloring surrounding its eyes. It lives alone or in couples and its natural habitat are warm places as the plains, thorny scrubs and forests. National Flower – The Orchid![]() Courtesy of orchidflowerhq.com It is represented by the orchid, known scientifically as Catleya Mossiae, and was declared National Flower on May 23rd 1951. Its scientific name pays homage to the Englishman William Cattley, who cultivated the first bulbs of this plant in the year of 1818, through some species sent from Brazil and it was the Botanist John Lindley who gave it its scientific name. The Catleya was found in Venezuela in 1839 and was given the name of May Flower, since that is around the time when it blooms. There are a great many species of orchid in Venezuela, and they are all so gorgeous, that it is very difficult to say which is the most beautiful. They can be found in every geographical area of the country in their many different varieties, since they grow as easily in the hot areas as in the rainy or colder regions near the highlands. Indigenous to the country, its height varies between 6 and 12 meters. Its trunk is characterized for being straight, cylindrical, averaging 60 centimeters in diameter with a bifurcated branch structure and extended crown. During the months of February and May it imparts a colored aura of extraordinary beauty in every place. El Alma LlaneraYo nací en una rivera
del Arauca vibrador
soy hermano de la espuma
de las garzas, de las rosas
y del sol.
Me arrulló la vida diana
y la brisa del palmar
y por eso tengo el alma
como el alma primorosa
del cristal.
Amo, canto, rio y sueño
con claveles de pasión
Amo, canto, río y sueño
y le canto a Venezuela
con alma de probador
Yo nací en una rivera
del Arauca vibrador
soy hermano de la espuma
de las garzas, de las rosas
y del sol.
